There are two reasons why a person needs to complete a DUI program.
- In order to obtain a license to drive after a driving under the influence arrest or conviction.
- As part of probation following a court conviction.
DUI Program Length
The length depends on the court conviction. The following facts affect how long the program will be:
- Whether it is the persons’ first DUI conviction;
- Whether there was an accident;
- Whether anyone was injured in the accident;
- The blood alcohol percentage of the driver;
- The county where the DUI occurred;
- Whether the person refused to provide a blood, breath, or urine sample.
Minimum Requirements
State law has minimum requirements for the length of DUI programs:
- Wet and reckless conviction: Minimum 12 hour course.
- 1st DUI conviction: Minimum 3 month course (30 hours).
- 1st DUI conviction with blood alcohol over .20%: Minimum 9 month course (60 hours).
- 1st DUI conviction with refusal to complete a test: Minimum 9 month course (60 hours).
- 2nd or more DUI: Minimum 18 month course (70+ hours).
Finding Your DUI Program
Each county in California contracts with local DUI course providers. To find your course provider, check the county website.
Enrolling in a Program
To enroll you will typically need a referral from court or a driver printout from the DMV. However, the best practice is to contact the DUI program provider and ask them what how to enroll.
Most providers have an enrollment fee. You can contact the local provider in the county where your DUI occurred.
