If the DMV suspends your license due to a DUI arrest or DUI conviction, you can continue to drive with a DUI restricted license.
Options for DUI Restricted License
Ignition Interlock Device
You can apply for a restricted license immediately with the installation of an ignition interlock device. An ignition interlock device is also known as an “IID.” An ignition interlock device prevents a vehicle from starting until a person provides a breath sample with .00% blood alcohol content (BAC).
With this type of restricted license, the driver may drive at any time, to any place. The ignition interlock requirement remains in place until the suspension ends. For more information on DUI license suspensions, click here.
The driver may obtain this license at any time if they meet the requirements below.
Requirements for IID License
The requirements for and IID restricted license are:
- Enroll in a DUI class;
- Obtain SR-22 Insurance;
- Install an ignition interlock device in your vehicle;
- Pay a $125 fee to the DMV. (There are additional fees if the suspension is due to a court conviction.)
To obtain the license, visit a DMV field office and provide proof of the requirements above.
Should I get an IID restricted license?
The main benefit of an IID restricted license is that it allows the driver to drive immediately. The driver can obtain this license on the first day that their suspension starts. Another benefit is that the driver can driver anywhere and at any time.
The main downside to an IID restricted license is that it is costly. There is an installation cost, a daily fee, a recalibration fee, and a removal fee.
Restricted To-From License
You can apply for a restricted license that allows you to travel to and from employment. It also allows you to travel during employment and to and from a DUI program. This restriction will remain in place for the duration of your DUI suspension, plus an additional time period. The additional restricted license period depends on:
- How many prior DUIs the driver has;
- Whether the suspension is due to a DUI arrest or a court conviction.
Requirements for To-From License
- Serve 30 days of the DMV suspension;
- Enroll in a DUI class;
- Obtain SR-22 Insurance;
- Pay a $125 fee to the DMV. (There are additional fees if the suspension is due to a court conviction.)
To obtain the license, visit a DMV field office and provide proof of the requirements above.
